I just love hijiki. Sure, if you are not used to Asian food, it might look really weird to you. It's healthy though so maybe give it a try! I haven't been to Marukai or Nijiya outside of Hawaii and California, but if you have one near you, it might be worth it to see if they have a small, pre-made portion of it near the ready made bento area, since they have had it at every store of theirs I have been to.Since this will absorb water and swell, this should make you a lot. I like it because I don't live near an Asian market, and it's a great value! Much better price per weight than the other options on Amazon, and just as cheap as if you were to buy it in the store -the ones I checked, anyway. (In case it changes in the future, for reference as of this review it is about $1 an ounce). But, I live in California so maybe you might be able to get it cheaper near you, still a great deal to me though. Totally beats a 30 min to an hour drive in sometimes heavy traffic for me.I'm not really a connoisseur of seaweed, or more specifically, hijiki, so I can't tell you whether or not this is high grade stuff, all I can say is that it tasted great! Do not eat it just from the bag though!!!Here is a recipe from Just Bento, run by Makiko Itoh, in case you wanted one:*Edit: I tried to provide a direct link, but saw it got filtered out, so just Google "Just Bento Hijiki," then it should be the first result. If not it's called "Stewed Hijiki with Carrots and Fried Tofu."I just love Maki, the lady who also runs Just Hungry. I can say I have personally tried a number of her recipes, and they always turn out yummy! You don't have to use the exact ingredients she used, I only made my last batch with soybeans and it came out delicious.Something important to note though, is that hijiki does have some arsenic, so don't eat too much. There are more specific numbers if you want to read about it here on Maki's other website Just Hungry.*Edit: Here I tried to provide another link but same as last time, just Google "Just Hungry Seaweed," should also be the first result. If not, the whole title is "Seaweed: Hijiki, Wakame, Kombu, Nori, Kanten."Just another reason why I love Maki and her websites :] She is very thorough.Make sure you read that whole part though, because while it does sound scary, unless you love hijiki more than I do and are planning to eat loads and loads of it, they say you should be fine. You should probably eat a variety of foods anyway though, since even though hijiki is healthy for you, variety (of healthy foods anyway) is king.Sorry the review was so long, I just figured since no one else had reviewed it maybe some of you were like me and hesitant to buy things that have no reviews, especially since it comes in such a big quantity compared to the others on here. Normally I myself only look at things with 4 star plus reviews, but there weren't many options, so I decided to give this a try. I'm glad I did!

I meant to order sheets, made a mistake but...
..it was a lucky mistake. This is great for soups. Tasty, fresh, and lots of it.

Too crunchy
It's hard to enjoy because it's so hard. Tastes fine

This product Has a warning on the bag it is in, that it may endanger health.
I bought 3 pounds of Hijiki seaweed. On the bag is this warning, "This product contains a chemical known to the state of CA to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. (CA law requires this warning to be given to customers in the state of CA)." No warning was given in product description on Amazon. I would never have bought this product had I known ahead it could endanger my health. I would like a full refund. This product, in my opinion, should not be sold.

Tremendous value for hiziki lovers.
Very good value. I like cooking with hiziki, rather than simply strewing it over salads, and so forth, so the fact that it comes in bits, rather than the long strings lots of folks love, doesn't bother me at all. In fact, it blends better with your sauces. And the amount of product in the bag is huge. If I ever run out, I'll certainly buy it again.

I MAKE MY HIJIKI WORK FOR ME WHEN I EMERSE ...
I MAKE MY HIJIKI WORK FOR ME WHEN I EMERSE IN WATER TWO OUNCES OF HIJIKI. IN A HALF HOUR IT IS READY TO USE. I USE A TABLESPOON OF HIJIKI WITH MY 4 CUPS OF BROWN RICE THAT HAS SOAKED OVER NIGHT (PROBABLY RINSED 2 OR 3 TIMES DURING THAT PERIOD). I THEN ADD 1LB OF FROZEN BROCOLLI, A BERMUDA ONION. THEN I ADD POWDERED GARLIC, TUMERIC, CUMIN, CURRY AND A DASH OF PEPPER AND OF COURSE A LITTLE OLIVE OIL. EVERYTHING GOES INTO MY RICE COOKER WITH 6 GLASSES OF WATER. MY MEAL FOR ONE WEEK HAS TAKEN ME ONLY 45 MINUTES TO PREPARE!!!
