A Complete Guide to Special Effects Makeup: Conceptual Creations by Japanese Makeup Artists Paperback – Illustrated, 27 April 2012

I am a final year costume student, and everyone I have shown this book to on my course has immediately gone and ordered it for themselves! The Japanese are not afraid to push boundaries and these make-ups are no exception, but not only do you get beautifully detailed photographs, but also instructions on how to carry out many of them. There are ideas for Steampunk, Gothic and Horror, some Altered Boots, plus an anthropromorphic Cat...If I had this book earlier in the year my designs would have taken a very different direction! Although many techniques will be beyond the expertise of the beginner there are a lot of good starting points, plus a lot of costume/cosplay/fashion/artwork inspiration for people looking for something alternative.

Amazing pictures - this would be great just to have as a coffee-table book for those that are interested in special effects makeup. Gives great step-by step and tips to make up the visual effects in the pics. My only slight downside, is that as any one knows who actually uses special effect makeup - if you were to use the book whilst creating your masterpiece - the book would be ruined by sticky fingers :-)

This book over time has been hard to come by with first print text errors and people selling it for a kings ransom. I finally got my hands on this paperback and i am in no way disappointed! straight away your greeted with styles of artwork leading on to specific creations of masks, teeth, ears, scars and plenty more!!!I am a SFX artist and this book is like a mini bible that everybody should have especially when there are courses and guides online that cost a fortune, this book will set the way for you, i highly recommend this as your starting point or another technique to build on

I thought this was an excellent book . However it was passed on as a present to a more knowing person who I think will like very much. Well illustrated well documented in my opinion

Fantastic book! Very easy to follow and thorough. Would agree with some of the other reviews that it might not be for compete novices and some prior knowledge on the subject would be advisable. I did a make up for film and TV short course in London about a year and a half ago across four days and during this course we did touch on the basics of Sfx make up. When I say basics, I mean basics but enough base knowledge to navigate this book with a good amount of confidence.

Daughter ordered this book with some of her pocket money. She is on the first stages of her journey towards gaining qualifications in SFX makeup and prosthetics.After having a quick peruse myself, this book has some fantastic imagery within it along with some helpful hints & tips. It is based more around the Japanese SFX artists I believe but that causes no issues. She has already put some of the ideas/tips to good use and has created a few of her own 'creatures, cuts & styles' in preparation for All Hallows.

I stumbled upon this book on Amazon and was intrigued by the bizarre images on the cover. As an aspiring special effects make up artist, it's fascinating to see a Japanese take on the art. If you're into make up or art, this book is a must. It's highly detailed and gives in depth explanations as to how to achieve the looks shown in the book. Some of the makes are quite intricate and some skill is needed, but it seems as though it would be easy to find a way around the tricky bits.All in all, this book is truly amazing and well worth the money.Delivery was all on time, and packaged very well.

This is a fantastic book! Lots of great ideas, and how to do them. Bought this for my daughter for her birthday and she thinks it's great! 😊
