Initial impressions.
The axe was packed decently and shipping was fast. The initial wood splitting took some 'adjusting' as I'm used to using a monster maul. So far I have been quite pleased in the 'surviving abuse' category. It has survived several over strikes and misses with no visible damage. The handle seems to be very durable for a synthetic material regarding over strikes. The axe itself was sharp and proved to be very easy to sharpen with a file as the misses required some touch up filing. There seems to be some law of nature that any axe hitting dirt will always find a stone of sufficient size to ding the edge. If you don't hit the ground, it seems to keep an edge quite well. The steel temper is such that I haven't chipped an edge yet but it maintains a sharp edge without being brittle, which is a good quality. That being said, the non stick coating seems to work for and against you. If you strike the wood with just enough force to split it, then it aids in friction reduction. The downside of the coating is that an insufficient strike to split the wood will result in the axe popping out of the split because of the non-stick coating. If it pops out, you don't have the option of striking the head with a sledge or picking the wood up, axe imbedded, and slamming one more time on the stump. The aiming qualities of this axe are really good and if you take your time, you will rarely miss. The diameter of the wood split for this review ranged from two inches to eight inches. Yeah, two inches was the aiming test. Overall I would give this splitting axe high marks except on wood with large and numerous knots. It is considerably lighter than the monster maul, therefore less tiring to use, but the monster is still required for those 'tough' knotty pieces as it has quite a weight advantage and even then, sometimes the chain saw comes out to deal with the really obstinate pieces. It does have a short learning curve in terms of adjusting your swing for just the right amount of strike energy. Swing too hard and you will begin to chew up the splitting stump and too soft a swing will result in the axe popping out of the wood. Considering the axe weight, and therefore the range of wood it should be used on, I gave it five stars for its performance to date. Once you learn to adjust your swing for the wood piece, it will save you exertion and ease wood splitting. If you split wood, this is a very worth while axe to own and it will cover the majority of most peoples wood splitting requirements. Large diameter still goes to the monster maul though...

"Swinging" its' praises!
I don't normally like writing reviews this soon after purchase, but color me impressed! This thing actually splits wood like a hot knife through butter. Its' profile is somewhere in-between a felling axe and a splitting axe; and that's exactly what I wanted. It's also not nearly as heavy as a regular splitting axe (only 4 lbs.), but it gets the job done! I wanted that lighter weight so it could be a little more versatile than just splitting wood (even if it's really not supposed to be - don't judge!). Upon opening the box I was a little surprised to find a completely hollow handle with the end just wide open. I even did some internet research to make sure it wasn't defective! Apparently though, that's the way it is supposed to be. Despite my foregone conclusions on the handle, I decided to go out back and give it a try. After a couple of swings (and some misses), I quickly realized my skepticism was completely unfounded. Evidently Fiskars is really on to something with this design; virtually ZERO vibration. I used a wooden handled axe to cut through a large root the other day, and my hands hurt for days from the impacts/vibrations. There was none of that with this one though! I've always liked the way a solid wooden handle looked and felt, but no more. The size and weight of this axe turned out to be pretty perfect for my purposes. At 6'4" tall, I need a longer axe, and this one fits the bill. After a few hard blows that impacted the handle directly below the axe head, I can say it is holding up beautifully so far. Misses don't even leave a scratch, much less a dent or crack. Some splits are truly one swing splits as claimed, others take a bit more effort, but that's to be expected. Yes, in the picture I'm splitting logs from a dead pine tree that fell, and pine is a softer wood. It was however still extremely wet, and it split fine. I also tried it on some old/dry oak and it did great there as well (albeit a bit more effort), as oak is an extremely hard wood. And yet, no vibrations or sore hands! This axe actually made chopping wood fun again!

Fiskars X27 Super Splitting Axe, 36" Wood Splitting Axe
The Fiskars X27 Super Splitting Axe, 36" Wood Splitting Axe works well. The axe I received was sharp enough to slice thin wood pieces of a log. That is about the right sharpness for an axe. The people that say razor sharp are confusing a shaving razor for an axe. This axe is not razor sharp and it could not be with the axe edge angle. I had two types of trees taken down and in need of splitting, a large 30ft ornamental pear tree, not to be confused with a pear tree. And a large 30 ft river birch tree. If I only had the birch to split of the two trees I would have a more negative review of this axe. However the pear was a completely different story. The axe worked very good with splitting the pear. Having split both types of trees my review is more complete. The ornamental pear split very easy with this axe. On the other hand the river birch did not split at all with this axe. I tried swinging it as hard as I could, with total control of the axe, and could not get any of the birch to split. I did get the axe head to go into the log a few inches in. Looked good but it would not split. I realized after splitting the pear tree that the river birch is a difficult wood to split. I could not split the river birch with a maul either. It's a difficult wood to split all the way down to the final stand of wood connecting two pieces. I was able to split the river birch with a couple wedges but I had to drive them all the way thru and use a hand axe to cut thru the strands. It was a process of hitting the wedge then using the hand axe to split stands them back to the wedge. It was a slow process but worked. River birch does not split well, at least not the type of river birch I had. In summary this axe feels light to swing and easy to hit accurately. It does not require any crazy swings to split normal wood. It's very enjoyable to use and does not wear you out. The weight feels right, the handle has a great grip, and the swing feels good. I really like this axe and prefer it over other axes I have. After all the splitting I did and many hours trying to split river birch the axe still had a sharp edge. I did not need to sharpen it at all. This is a great axe to split wood with.

Wow! What an Axe!
This axe has done it all for me. I bought a piece of property in the mountains which has needed a considerable amount of clearing. There's nothing like having an ample supply of firewood for those weekend trips and this axe splits any variety of wood with ease. It is super lightweight and has decent vibration resistance. So far, its durability shows zero signs of issues, and I have used it for weekend trips for the last several months. At a great price point this axe is not only awesome looking but is a must have for your wood chopping needs.

There is a Reason This Ax Gets Such Great Reviews
After many purchases on Amazon, I think this may be my first review. I am extremely happy with this splitting ax. Here are my reasons for buying it: I do not own a wood stove, but I have had a number of large trees fall in the yard over the years. I typically just cut them with the chainsaw to a reasonable size and put them in the woods. However, I do have a fire pit and thought it would be great to start splitting some of these pieces into a size that would burn easier and would be more manageable. I could not justify a power splitter because, as I mentioned, I do not heat using a wood stove, and I thought using this ax would be good exercise. The number of positive reviews on amazon and YouTube convinced me to buy this particular splitting ax. Those reviews were correct. This was a great purchase that was well worth the money. Here are why I think it is great: Simply put, it cuts better and with less force than any maul or splitting ax that I have used. Nearly every cut is a full split on the first swing. In many cases, you do not have to use a full swing to split the logs, and those instances where I did not have a full split was because I only lightly swung the ax. Essentially, you can look at the blade design and see it is well designed to cut and wedge the wood. While not paper light, it is much lighter than a maul meaning one can work longer with it too. I used this ax primarily on Oak and Poplar. I also used it on green and old wood. The green obviously took a fuller swing, but not by much. If you do find that you need to make a full swing, the handle is very long and the head is lighter than a maul; so, you can generate a lot of acceleration resulting in tremendous force. I also tested it in near freezing weather because I was concerned that the composite handle may have issues in the cold (much like one is not supposed to use a composite baseball bat in cold weather.) It had no issues at all. As a matter of fact, on my first swing, I took a hard swing and missed terribly. I hit the handle directly on the log. It only scuffed it slightly. There is also no real vibration in the handle like you get in a wood handle ax. The shape and texture at the end of the handle makes for an easy firm grip too, even with gloves on. In addition, I have seen in other reviews that Fiskars is great about honoring the warranty if something happens to the handle. In theory, this should be the last splitting ax that I ever have to buy. As with any splitting ax/maul, I do recommend putting your wood on a stump for those instances where you cut clear through the log. The blade is sharp and has held its edge well, but it would clearly chip if hit into gravel or an unexpected very hard surface or material. In addition, I recommend wrapping the wood in a tire or strap to stop the pieces from flying. This will stop you from having to bend over so often to pick up the pieces. In summary, this has been a great product that does what it is supposed to do very well. The multitude of positive reviews will attest to this. It is a superb product with a great warranty from a reputable company. If you need an ax or maul for log splitting, I see no reason not to buy this product.

GREAT Firewood Spitting Axe........But.....Read narrative
Fantastic Axe...but... Still enjoy splitting wood the old fashioned way with a splitting maul axe over a gas powered splitter. I'm 65 and stay in shape better than most young people. So I ordered this Fiskars splitting maul on one of Amazons special Gold box or lightening deals, especially since I have other Fiskars products. Received it a couple days ago and when I open the box and looked at it my first impression was high quality as the rest of their products, but my keen eye picked up right away on two areas that might be an issue. The observation made was that the handle (butt end) is made of what appears to be a plastic coating, not rubber coating. This could be a problem since you want your anchoring hand to be firm on the grip when swinging this to split wood. The shaft can be somewhat smooth as the other hand has to slide down to complete the split. So with some caution I gave it a test ride. My observations were correct. I first tested it dry with bare hands and it was at best, okay, felt like I had to really squeeze it to hang on. Then I put leather gloves on and it improved somewhat as far as a grip. Next tried wet gloves, not good. I then sprayed water on the shaft and butt grip ( as we know we do split wood in wet or rain conditions sometimes even though you shouldn't) The water lubricated the shaft creating a dangerous grip. Knowing that this was a good product and split wood with ease, I didn't want to send it back. I knew I could improve on it. I first sprayed the grip with a rubberized spray that I use for high voltage electrical connections which after a couple thin coats improved the grip by 1000 percent. I then took it one step further and wrapped the butt grip with hockey players stick tape and BAM...Now I have fantastic grip and it works amazingly well. Pros: Company with great products. Gold Box deal great price. Well constructed, well balanced, not heavy, splits well, good quality with only one small flaw in my opinion (grip) see cons below. Cons: Me personally I'm not real fond of the pistol grip end at the butt. I wish it was just a straight shaft or even a ball style at the end. Not a deal breaker, but it just feels a little awkward is all. Secondly the butt grip area of shaft is smooth plastic coated which feels slippery when gripping whether it's dry or wet conditions, hands only or with gloves. Remedy to vastly improve grip. Spray with rubberize electrical coating which is used for high voltage lines or electrical wire, which can be bought at Lowes or Home Depot, and or wrap with Hockey players stick wrap, and problem solved. My recommendation even based on the cons is to go buy this splitting maul axe. If it was not for the grip issue I would have give this a 5 star rating.

This axe is so amazing I want to cry and fall to my knees.
Wow.. in a word, this axe is amazing. It's such a breath of fresh air when a company has done their home work and produced a product that you can be proud to own and use. I originally started looking for splitting axes after breaking several mauls from home depot. Let me tell you, when you walk into HD to return a maul that is now in two pieces, they give you sort of a funny look. But, to their benefit, they do usually refund your money. Anyway, so after a few broken mauls, I decided to start doing some research on-line. I read up on a few wood related forums and finally decided on spending some money for something better. I don't remember the brand names, but I was surprised to see people paying $150 to $200 for a high end splitting axe. Now, I like fine tools as much as the next guy, but I have a hard time forking over $200 for an axe. I mean, I have a log splitter after all and it only cost a bit over $250! Then I ran across the great reviews on amazon for these Fiskars X axes. I watched the videos and pretty soon I decided to order one (on sale at amazon for $39.95). I went with the X27 because its 36 inches most closely matched the axes and mauls I am accustom to using (most being about 33 inches in length). After watching the video here on amazon, I was very impressed with the design. I placed my order and the axe arrived a few days later (thanks amazon prime!!) Wow.. the X27 is a thing of beauty. The weight is really nice and the design is just first class from start to finish. Speaking of first class, I also called the company to ask some questions and their customer service was also top drawer. I've used the axe a bit and I have to say, it puts my other axes and mauls to shame. The speed of the swing is faster and the wood just almost explodes when the X27 head hits it. It just makes splitting wood a joy. In fact, I have already ordered a second X27 so my friend can come over and help me split up some rounds which are sitting on my property. I can't wait to put this axe through its paces. Let me just say also that I'm super picky about my tools - pretty much a perfectionist when it comes to anything for the garage. But the X27 passes all the tests with flying colors. I just can't say enough great things about it. And for the price, well.. you just can't beat it. You would be crazy to spend roughly the same money at your local hardware store for an inferior product, when the X27 is available in the world and represents such a fine tool for wood splitting. I'm currently looking into buying one of their smaller splitting axes to work along side the two X27's - that's how impressed I am with this axe.

Makes quick work of splitting, lightweight, comfortable, seems to be well constructed.
This splitting axe is excellent. I recently purchased this axe and put it to use over the past few days splitting some cherry. Some of this cherry was dry dead standing and some was green but cut a few weeks ago. This is a lightweight splitting axe and I was skeptical immediately but the amount of positive reviews were enough to make me curious to purchase this. I only have a traditional splitting maul to compare this against and it was no contest. I anticipated that this was not going to work on well on pieces that did not have straight grain. Here is the skinny... on straight grained cherry (and I would assume most other species) cut at lengths of about 18 inches and diameters anywhere from 8 to 14 inches I only needed to swing the axe from above my head without putting any extra power into it - just the weight of the axe took care of the wood, this was found in green and dry rounds. Now... onto the tough pieces, some of the pieces had crooked grain and branches that were cut off when the tree was felled. These proved to be more difficult. That would be the case with any splitting tool. Once piece of dry, twisted, base trunk wood at a about a diameter of at least 20 inches was the most difficult. It took repeated hits with a lot of power behind it to get it to split. Working from the outside in it was made into stovewood... eventually. I compared this with the splitting maul on the round that was just above it - the slitting maul just bounced off and made no progress. I will say that even with the gnarly twisted trunk wood mentioned above when it was hit with the X27 it would always go into the wood about an inch or slightly more and make splits across the top of the round (unlike the traditional maul - that just bounced off). I really appreciate this axe and am glad that I purchased it. Also some reviewers mentioned that they had the axe head develop chips across the sharpened edge - I saw or experienced no such problems. I do have some of the paint or whatever they coated the axe with now worn off so I oiled the head so it will not rust. The plastic scabbard/sheath is interesting and seems to work well. The handle is very comfortable and the orange is nice so it is easy to find. I split with both gloves and without gloves - worked great both ways. The handle did seem to absorb most vibrations. If I had the need to split 5 - 6 cord per year I think that I would not even bother with a gas splitter (maybe). But... keep in mind that I only used this on cherry and only for about one cord (face cord). I have some dry red oak to give it a whirl on and will update if the results are much different.

Best splitting Axe I've used
Ok so I've gone from struggling with a felling axe which ended up snapping the timber handle as I tried to split large blocks, ended up looking for a replacement and got to learn that a splitting axe or maul would be better suited for the job. Fiskars was praised by many and although I'm located in Oz I made purchase from the US via Amazon, was really pleased by the speed of delivery and ended up costing slightly less than local purchase. Now to the axe it self, man what a world of difference it has made. I am getting through some very large blocks with half the effort and time, the axe never gets stuck like my old felling axe and for a skinny dude like me I am finding I can swing this baby with some force (weight is distributed towards the head) Absolutely loving this new axe and could have saved some dollars by by passing the felling axe to begin with.
