Good book but I was under the impression I’d get a CD with it , so I’m disappointed .. I would have ordered the used book in that case

Pretty good complete course. The book is a slight update of a much older book. The cd is just a copy of the old cassette. There have been some official spelling changes which have not been completely adopted.

Great book. But it's hard to learn without audio files. I wanted to buy full version of this book, but the price is to high as for me.

This book definitely has good points and bad points. Cards on the table, I am an experienced language teacher having taught my degree subjects of Russian and Spanish for many years. I also speak Finnish. I have been wanting to learn Romanian for a long time. You can never learn a language from one course alone so this is only one of the books I have bought. I find it useful mostly as a grammar reference. It covers the grammar in depth but to be honest I think it goes too quickly for a non-linguist. I have found it has really helped my knowledge of verbs and have especially appreciated the verb tables at the back of the book.One draw back is, as mentioned by the reviewer Stuart, that the editing has been sloppy and too often exercises demand knowledge not even covered in the lesson. It also badly needs updating as it's obviously pre-internet era!I've used it on an iPad mini and there are only two problems I've noted. One minor is that the box that appears when the mp3 plays can obscure the bottom of the page but is not movable. Another is the that verbs tables have not worked so the verb appears as a list in the wrong order instead on in a box in the right order. I have a paper back copy of the book and have ended up using it side by side with my iPad.My advice is use this book to give yourself a grounding in the grammar. Use Colloquial Romanian: The Complete Course for Beginners (Colloquial Series (Book Only)) for a modern text and more useful dialogues. Having used this book now for nearly six months, I thought I'd post a review.The book will probably be acceptable to anyone for whom Romanian is not their first foreign language. But Romanian is not easy, and if it is your first foray outside of English the book's style and production may put you off foreign languages forever.The small size of this book belies its content. If you plough through it you will emerge at something like 'A' level standard. A less ambitious approach might have made the vocabulary lists that precede each chapter a bit less daunting.Unlike French and Italian Romanian has noun declension, and has some difficult vowel sounds like Russian. I can see that tables, with their connotations of learning by rote, are unfashionable, but appendices with these declensions would be a valuable reference; they are not included. I have also spotted a few minor errors that perhaps stem from incomplete proof-reading of amended earlier additions, though these undermine confidence rather than mislead. Unforgiveably however, several of the exercises require language that is not introduced until later chapters. At first I thought this was a deliberate strategy to fire-up a generally able audience, but I now realise these mistakes simply stem from sloppy editing.There is also a slightly dated feel about the book, a shame as this ought to be easily rectified by the authors. 'Mobile', 'internet' and even 'computer' appear to fail to make it into the texts or the index, although 'cash machine' does. 'Apartment block', 'teacake', 'telegram' and 'bathing costume' do feature, however. For me this imparts an old-world allure that certainly gets me booking my train tickets, but it may put others off. I shall be interested to find out when I visit just how useful the advice is on p4, that "It is customary for a man to kiss the hand of a lady when introduced to her". One gets the feel of a book which has had its cover made-over but not its contents.For context, I've got GCSEs in Italian and Russian, though I've forgotten almost all of both. In summary - OK if you're an old hand at languages; anyone else - start with French or buy a much slimmer Romanian Phrasebook.

Take your time on this and listen carefully to the exercises. Chances are you will never become a fluent Romanian speaker but after a while you will begin to learn some phrases and get an insight into how the language works. I have a degree in Spanish and Portuguese and am pretty good in French and it is very hard even for me. That is not the fault of this book, which I think is well structured - provided you already know about reflexive, passive and subjunctive verbs etc.

For somebody who learns other languages since childhood, this book is a complete disappointment. No conjugation, no variation of yes & no answers, not even how many cases the language has. My romanian teacher is as disappointed with this book as I am.

This is a really good way of getting to grips with Romanian for a beginner. Yes, there are some slightly archaic phrases and words, but in conjunction with an online dictionary and a good grammar book it's a really helpful, lively way to get through the frustrating first steps in the language. If you've never learnt a language before the explanations of what things like 'verb' and 'pronoun' mean are helpful, equally if you've already spent a lot of time learning languages they're not too intrusive.

Full of information but hard work. The answers key at the end is difficult to follow and could be better laid out.Romanian is a complicated language with innumerable grammatical endings.

I like how they ease you into the language.

The content is good and progresses at a steady pace for the beginner. However it is not really ideal for a Kindle and really needs the accompanying CD (which I unfortunately didn't have).

Easy approach and well structured book. It will guide you smoothly with useful exercises and online audio. I am at chapter 7 and so far it’s working very well.

A quality teaching product, unfortunately I am still a novice with the language to the behest of my partner, only the swear words can I truly say I have mastered.

Have not used yet but look good

The progression is very steep and so is not for the non-linguist
