Is it possible 1) to exchange the metal tank for a food grade plastic one of the same capacity and 2) add a UV filter to this system?

Dear Valued CustomerYes you can add UV to the system and about the tank we do not carry the plastic tank any more but let me give you some info about the tank Inside the tank is a bladder made of a material called butyl. Water does not touch the metal or plastic shell of the tank. It touches only the butyl bladder and spout (usually stainless steel or hard plastic) as it enters or leaves the tankA synthetic rubber, or Elastomer, butyl rubber is impermeable to air and used in many applications requiring an airtight rubberThis RO tank has been tested and certified by NSF International under NSF/ANSI Standard 58 for material and structural integrity.Best Regards

How do you know it is time to change the filters?

@Climers got it right. Most of the other answers are not, in that they suggest you to change filters AFTER you have detected something wrong at the output. Well, by that time, your RO membrane is kaput - no good any more. RO membranes are very sensitive to chlorine; so you must change your 3 front-line filters (1 sediment and 2 carbon) before they start to leak chlorine to the membrane. Doing so will prolong your membrane's life for many years. I have had a system working perfectly after 8+ years of continuous service, just by changing the first 3 filters regularly (yearly).

Yes, You can also get them at Walmart, Home Depot, Etc if you live where there is one.
