Incredible learning resource
Such an incredible book. It was the course text for a great education class I took for my Masters, and I still use the concepts I learned today, and try to incorporate its tips into my lessons for students.

Book was printed/assembled wrong! 🤦♂️🤣
I was so excited to get this book by Saundea McGuire as I have the other book in the series written for faculty/teachers ("Teach Students How to Learn"), which I ordered from Amazon a few months ago, and it was printed/assembled correctly. This book, however, ("Teach Yourself How to Learn"), was completely goofed up by the printing house. I've attached photos.I've filed for a replacement to be sent by Amazon and I'll return this one, as it can't be read. Really hoping the book that's coming isn't from the same batch! Oooooops!!!Still giving the book 5 stars, as I know it and the book for teachers are fabulous. The printing problem is not a reflection of the content by the author!

One of the very best books on how to study
Dr. McGuire has written an OUTSTANDING book that college students who are willing to work hard will find invaluable. I loved reading the "miracle stories" of students who went from despair because of poor grades to excitement and confidence after their grades improved. These should make other students feel hopeful that if they use these strategies and work hard that they, too, can succeed. This is the only book I know of that includes advice and strategies for problem solving. While I was writing my book, Straight A's Are Not Enough, I spent 6 years doing research on how we learn. What I found most disturbing was that most books I studied never explained how to study. They covered subjects like time management, note taking, reading a book, and good habits like going to class and sitting up front. When it came to study they suggested finding a place with few distractions, having all your materials ready, and even taking study breaks... and then told students to study. But when you tell students to study, they memorize. And, when they memorize, they might do well on a test but very quickly they forget nearly everything. That isn't getting a good education. It was exciting to read a book that clearly explains what students should do when they study. What I really loved was her description of study as the focused, joyful work of deep learning. I agree with the comment "I wish I'd had this book when I was a student. "

Good, but the tone is too self-help
This book had some good ideas and suggestions, but is written in the tone of a self-help book. Therefore it lacks the nuance which I think is required as it addresses a complex subject. I don't doubt that the prescriptions that it offers work, but its focus only on success stories gives one the impression that the strategies are easy to use, and will result in instant and extremely positive results. Life doesn't work that way, from my experience. Changing old habits takes time and effort, and the promise of instant results marketed by the author may result in some readers not understanding the incremental nature of truly changing ones habits. Each of us must go about that process in an individual manner. It is worth reading, with the caveat that you should not be too hard on yourself, as you incorporate the strategies into your learning, and find the ones that work for you.

Wow! This book is such an uplifting read!Dr. McGuire reached over 35 strategies and tips to ace any class. So many useful tips and positively motivating encouragement is in this book! I can not wait to go back to school to implement these tips! She really unlocks how to learn and gives you the tools!! I noticed so many of my best teachers used most of these resources, but now I feel so inspired and empowered after inhaling this book in a couple hours! Don’t wait and read this today!

So much to learn from this
Great book for anyone willing to change their mindset and really start to learn instead of memorizing for the short term.I still have to keep track to see the results, but the book shows valuable techniques you can use to learn anything. The book is indeed focused on students and has many references for the college environment, but for sure the techniques can be used in any field of learning.

Not new condition
I thought I was purchasing a new book. Instead, I received a copy with scratches on front cover and some stains(coffee?) on pages. Very disappointed. I wouldn’t have paid $21.60 for a used copy if I had known!
