What are the actual dimensions of the surface? Someone said it is only 3.6 inches wide, but how long? Obviously not 13.4" as stated in product details

I don't have it handy but it is the same dimension as any standard drywall sander. The precut sandpiper fits it just fine. I really like this sander. I was concerned about some of the comments but am glad I tried it anyway

How is the sandpaper attached to the sander?

If I recall, the the wire clamps lift up from the front and the sandpaper ends are placed under them. I also remember it took a lot of strength to lift the clamps, but it holds securely.

can this be used to sand painted wood?

This unit holds sandpaper. It will sand whatever you rub the sandpaper against.

Can i use different grit paper with this? are there packages sold with assorted sizes? i am a self taught diyer so i have a lot to learn.

It can hold any grit, the sheet just needs to fit the product, 3.375 Inch L x 9 Inch. Sanding packages are sold in assorted or specific size packages. Many different size options, 3-Pack, 5-Pack, 25-Pack, ect.
