Numb

This book offers you an inside view of the thought process of people resorting to extreme steps to hurt themselves. It is amazing that the six human Needs and their order guide our lives. This book is impactful as it is based on the stories of real people and how they overcame their destructive behavior. I hope more parents read this and try to understand their kids better.

Too often in literature dealing with mental health challenges do we find strategies for dealing with these issues that revolve around categorising, labelling, and treating the behaviours in question... This is NOT one of those books. Veenu and her co-authors approach this complex and sensitive topic with the respect, empathy, and understanding that it deserves. Rather than simply seeking to treat the symptom, Numb helps us all to see the bigger picture, and develops an understanding of the context that self-harm commonly occurs in, allowing us to love, support, and understand ourselves and others in a deeper and greater way.

While I had heard of self harm, I had no idea it was so prevalent. Not only did each of the six women/girls give their own definition and tell their strory they also provided tips and strategies. Wonderful book. Short and powerful.

Deeply personal and empowering.

This book is forthright in explaining reasons for self harm and its negative effects. It explains how the women stopped the self harming, gives advice to parents and others as to how to support their loved one. It is well written and excellent. As a psych nurse for 32 years working with adults who were self harming I can say these women give me hope and will give others hope for a non self-harming future.
