Armed with his copy of Bradshaw's Victorian Railway Guidebook, Michael Portillo takes to the tracks and over a series of four journeys, he travels from coast to coast to see what of Bradshaw's Britain remains. This 4 DVD set features 20 episodes covering 4 different journeys:Ayr to EdinburghAmersham to London BridgeDerby to LindisfarnePembroke Dock to CambridgePassionate about trains, Michael Portillo continues to chart the great British romance with the railways in this phenomenally successful series. Armed with his copy of George Bradshaw's famous railway handbook, he retraces four journeys that were first documented in the Victorian guide, witnessing what's changed and discovering how our love of the railways began. Throughout, he makes stops at some of Britain's most beautiful cities and secluded villages, meeting extraordinary people and hearing how their lives have been shaped by the railways.Michael takes to the tracks again for this complete sixth series, with four new journeys in which he tries his hand at curling, visits the birthplace of golf, gives an old engine a fresh start in Derby, explores London's Highgate Cemetery, takes a trip to Lindisfarne, learns of the miners who fuelled the Industrial Revolution, explores the treasures of the Bodleian Library... and much more! Review: Conecrned that future programmes may not be released on DVD - I received series 6 in the post from desertcart today. My understanding is that the BBC shop is no longer selling DVD’s, Blu-Rays or books anymore. Everything on their site is now digital. Slightly concerned if other Michael Portillo programmes are all going to be released on the DVD format in the future? Good news is that Series 7 and the Great American Railways Journeys series 1 are due to be released on DVD in August (see Networkonair.com). Also wondering if there is going to be a series 8 as series 7 is being released much earlier than previous series. Still no sign of Great Continental Journey series 4 being released on DVD, but you can download it from the BBC. I’m old school and still like to have my media on DVD or Blu-ray. I have all this series and Great Continetial Railways on DVD in my collection. I really don’t want to have to be connected to the Internet to watch any programmes I own. Portillo's train journeys
Enjoyable. As well as the journeys themselves (some splendid aerial shots), you get to know a little of the background of each town he stops at. However, if your interest is the railways themselves, there isn't much information about them.
