The fastest drive on deck
You know, as a new owner of a steamdeck I love the fact that I can take my games on the go. Storage is an issue however. As time goes on, games are getting bigger, and 1tb of storage really doesn't go as far as it used to. I could install a SD card in the deck but then I'm confined to the limited read and write speeds. This SSD is compatible with the steam deck. It wasn't hard to just clone the Steamdeck OS and library to it using konsole, shut the unit down. Toss it into battery mode, undo 12 screws and install it. Yes, it's that easy. So what do we get for the trouble? Well the stock 1tb Steamdeck ssd runs at about 2300 mb/s. This SSD runs at about 3535 mb/s. This equates to faster loading times and better game stability. There are a few notable things however. In desktop mode this SSD runs kinda toasty. While it didn't lose stability, in desktop mode it does run hotter. For some reason this is not something that happens in game mode. It's also worth noting that it's not a good idea to use this with a modified Steamdeck backplate. Most of the backplates with the extra vents rob the deck of a lot of the airflow from the right side. It equates to the SSD not getting the airflow it needs. If you're in game mode this isn't an issue. If you're in desktop mode, it will be. Consider these things before purchase. Aside from that, it's the fastest 2280 SSD that you can pop in. I don't regret it.

Massive upgrade for my Steam Deck
Massive upgrade for my Steam Deck! I installed the WD_BLACK SN770M 2TB in my Steam Deck, and it’s been amazing. The install was super easy, and the speed difference is instantly noticeable — games load fast and everything feels smoother. Having 2TB of space means I can keep my whole library on deck without worrying about running out of room. It runs cool, performs great, and so far has been rock solid. If you’re thinking about upgrading your Steam Deck’s storage, this drive is 100% worth it.

Great for Steam Deck OLED
Used this baby to upgrade my Steam Deck OLED from 512GB storage to 2TB. It was the correct fit, and the video+written guide on iFixit made installation (relatively) easy to install… battery cable plug was really in there, and had fragile-looking adhesive-attached ribbon cable to get out of the way, but I managed not to destroy anything! Following the guide, all went well. Took care to preserve and reuse the stock SSD heat sleeve from the OEM SSD. Been around a year, still fast and stable.

Works wonderfully, is reliable, cool and soooo fast!!!!!
This is a fast little SSD. It also stays very cool and no matter how hard the laptop runs it, it has remained at 100% health the entire time. Very durable and high quality SSD. Have no complaints!!!!!

Great drive at a great price with a great, known brand.
Western Digital makes quality hard drives, period. The performance is always good, they always seem to work and the cost is better than buying from the computer manufacturer. I purchased this for my college freshman's new laptop. You couldn't get anything more than a 512G hard drive and that wasn't going to be enough. Installing was easy after we figured out how to open the laptop housing. The WD drive fit as expected and worked perfectly after we made a direct backup of the original drive. Compatibility was never an issue and 2tb of capacity was exactly what we needed.

TLC cache is a must
This is virtually the only M.2 2230 2 TB NVME SSD that has a TLC cache. That means it's the only one you should be buying! The vast majority of the competitors (both cheap Chinese and even many "name" brands surprisingly) in this category have either fully QLC or partially QLC (sometimes written as "pSLC," which mixes QLC and TLC). QLC cache is fast, very fast, up until it gets full... Which means 15 seconds or so into writing anything, the speed will jump off a cliff. That's why the inital speeds with all your other NVMEs are GREAT, but then after a little bit, it crawls to nothing. Do research on each drive you're looking at! But if you want one that's guaranteed to have TLC, this was the ONLY listing in the top 20 listings I had—EVEN WHEN SEARCHING "TLC cache" mind you!

Cooked in a Day, Trying Again
TLDR; Make sure you install a heatsink. The 25x25x10mm heatsink does *not* fit in the ROG Ally. I installed this in my ROG Ally, installed Windows, Steam, etc. During my first round of game installs the system threw a BSOD, which I wrote off as a quirk. It booted back up and everything was fine. I started the install for Cyberpunk and left for dinner. When I got back, the system was hung. I got HWINFO going before I attempting the install again and the drive temp was running at 70c when idle. I started the install and the temp went up to 77c but I was still out of the "danger zone" of the low 80s. Some time before the install finished, another BSOD. I pulled the drive and put it in an SSK enclosure without the cover so that it could be tested with HD Tune. After a full scan all blocks read successfully, but one had a low read speed in the speed map. When I attempted to retest the range I got nothing but errors. I closed and re-opened the program, but more errors. I unplugged the drive to reseat it in the enclose and it was running HOT. I couldn't see the drive temp over USB, but I imagine high 70s is probably accurate. I decided to just call the drive fried and get a replacement. Before installing the replacement I went ahead and added the standard "Steam Deck SSD Heatsink". I also had a pair of 14x10x4 aluminum heatsinks with an adhesive backing that came in a "100 Pcs Raspberry Pi Heatinsk" kit I had sitting around, so I slapped those on top of the copper heat spreader. After reinstalling Windows, updates and drivers I'm seeing temps ranging from 50c at idle to 67c under load. As I get back to installing games I'll see if the temps stay under control or not. Is it possible that my first drive ran hot because it was a dud? Sure. Is the heat spreader totally unnecessary? Maybe. Did the stick on fins have any affect at all? No idea. I will say that considering this drive is specifically advertised for Steam Deck/ROG Ally use, I do think that WD should include a heatsink with the drive or offer it as an addon similar to those hard cases they sell for portable HDDs.

A Must-Have Upgrade for Steam Deck Owners!
I upgraded my Steam Deck with the WD_BLACK SN770M 2TB and wow—what a difference! If you’re tired of juggling game installs or waiting on slow load screens, this drive is 100% worth it. Installation was super easy—it’s the exact 2230 size the Steam Deck needs, so no adapters or awkward fitting required. Just popped it in, reinstalled SteamOS, and I was good to go. The Steam Deck recognized it right away. The 2TB storage is a game-changer. I’ve loaded up my entire library and still have room left. No more deleting games to make space! Plus, it’s crazy fast. Load times are significantly shorter and navigating through menus feels way snappier. Also worth noting—this SSD runs cool and quiet, even during longer gaming sessions. That’s huge for a handheld device. ✅ Pros: Perfect size for Steam Deck (2230 form factor) Super fast (up to 5,150MB/s) Massive 2TB storage—say goodbye to space issues Reliable performance and runs cool Easy to install, even if you're not super techy ❌ Cons: Doesn’t come with a heatsink (though not really needed for Steam Deck) On the pricey side—but you get what you pay for If you're serious about getting the most out of your Steam Deck, this SSD upgrade is a no-brainer. I’d do it again in a heartbeat!
