Can you control the rotation through the app to make it act like a car for turning? Or does it just spin in place?

It just spins in place. It can not turn like a car. The cubelet app lets you change the data values of the sensors, allowing you to control the robot with the app like a remote control. You will need a bluetooth cubelet for that.
