Q: Can this device work within a network?

Not 100% sure what you mean but I think you want a signal from your NAS to be processed by the DEQ before the network picks it up? In a word, no. The DEQ has no RJ45 out but it does have optical and analogue out ( post processing ). The best you can do is run an optical or XLR cable from the DEQ to the optical/XLR in on your next system thereby utilising the DEQ processed output; optical and XLR are both capable of carrying signals long-distance without local interference - hope this helps.

Q: Interested only in listening to digital music through a set of high end earphones connected to a headphone amp. Overkill or worth it?

Overkill - Its really used to EQ room acoustics. Your headphones should be matched to your amp, so really wouldn't help.It works by flooding the room with white noise and problem frequencies with the acoustics can be identified via the microphone .

In answer to the first part of your question, yes it s intended use is a graphic equaliser, it's a digital version of a conventional analogue graphic equaliser where the filter frequency sliders appear on the display and can be set just as the physical ones on analogue version can be. Not quite sure what you mean by displaying frequencies in real time, but if by that you mean like an FFT display of frequencies, yes it does.

Q: can i use spidf in from my dac then through equalizer then spidf out back to my dac

The DEQ2496 has S/PDIF in and out, but it also has its own built-in DAC. If you prefer to use your own external DAC you might connect your signal source to the DEQ2496 input (S/PDIF or XLR) and the DEQ2496 S/PDIF output to the input of your external DAC. It's not clear why your external DAC has an S/PDIF 'output' at all, but such a connection is likely to come after the DAC's input in the signal path, so your planned connection sounds like it would be looping the DEQ2496 output back to its own input. Maybe refine your question?
