Can this be played acoustic, or without an amp, as well as plugged in to an amp?

Yes, you can play it acoustic or plugged in. Sound is quite thin when not plugged in though, and the action on this guitar is quite high (specially from fret 12 down). As a side note, this travel guitar is quite fragile. The wood around one of the tuning pegs at the bottom broke down on me on its third plane trip, so you might want to be very careful when placing it in an overhead compartment...
