How does it stay in place?

To keep the shield in place you place the shield on the inside of the door and put the top narrow piece over the top of the door securing it on the outside with a rubber sucker which is supplied. We have been using it for a couple of months and it has not come off so it works well.Regards Maurice

Once fitted to the door and secured in place, does this prevent the oven door closing properly? ie. Will the heat escape from the oven?

If fitted properly sand secured in place the oven door shuts perfectly and no heat escapes ? Why it should and it protects the oven door from a lot of messy splashing when cooking and roasting food. I just wash it in warm soaping water every couple of weeks.full marks!

Can this be used so children cant burn themselves on oven door?

The Oven Door Shield does not offer any protection against heat. It is simply a barrier to prevent the glass from your oven getting dirty. This is NOT an aid to protect from burns.

does this oven door shield stop runs going in between the 2 pieces of glass.

I am really happy with my door shield it's easy to install and keep clean. I guess it depends if the shield is slightly bigger than the glass in your oven door, which it is in mine.
