can you cut excess length off of the non-power end if you want to shorten it?

Negative, you can't cut the excess length off of the non-power end in the decorative led string lights if you want to shorten it. But the copper cable is soft, you can easily bend it to make it short. You may want to know the reason? bcz there are 3 groups of string in this cable, each group holds 100 led bulbs, they shunt in series, if you cut it, the rest lights of this cable will die. I hope I am understood well.

500ft is too long, the light colors will be different from the tip to the end. You can buy 3 sets of 165ft instead.
