You could but I don't think it would sound good. 3 of the Classical strings are nylon and are meant for a Classical guitar which are acoustic and have wider necks for finger style playing.

Why are the strings numbered?

notes are determined by the fret number at which the left hand finger depresses and the number of the string. Numbering the strings is for communicating technique, not for scoring music.

What's the difference between medium and high tension strings, aside from the obvious. How do you know which to use?

High tension have a warmer sound than the medium strings.
