Useful and interesting descriptions.Easy to understand Maps
A-Z york hidden walksThe maps are a good large scale with names of roads easily readable. This book has fabulous photos of the scenes to be viewed when on each walk. There are 20 main walks with a few of them having some small additions if you wanted to take them further.I felt that the writer had actually walked these routes himself as he had small pieces of advice to help with some areas and numerous interesting things to look out for.Not all the walks are inside the city, some are in suburbs as far as I can tell.Parking advice is mentioned at the start of each walk though it may not be the location of the actual beginning of the walk .The postcode is included which is helpful if you are using a GPS program on your phone to find the start. There is a small summary of the walk each time with a description of terrain which anyone who is with kids or who maybe has walking difficulties will find useful. The length of walk is also included in miles and K.The longest walk is about 6 1/4 miles .Most are 2 1/2 or 3 1/2 milesa small amount of 5 mile walksOne is 1 1/4milesNo mention is made of public loos but tourist information places would likely be able to advise on that. All in all a useful book with plenty of scope for discovering york on foot.

A superb book - don't visit York without it!
York Hidden Walks by Alan Sharp is not only a fantastic guide book to York, it highlights many things you might ordinarily have missed as you explore this beautiful city. There are 20 walks in the book, covering York city centre and the surrounding villages. Walks range from 1.25miles to 6.25miles and nine routes start and finish in the city centre.Alan Sharp begins each chapter with a description of what you can see on the walk and any relevant history. There is also a summary at the bottom of the page showing: start/finish point, nearest postcode, distance, time, and terrain. This is followed on the next page by a map with the route and attractions clearly marked, followed by detailed step by step directions.I’ve visited York a number of times over the years but there are things in this book that I have never even noticed before. I can’t wait to go back to York, armed with my well-thumbed copy of York Hidden Walks. It’s a superb little book and I’m certainly not visiting York again without it!

Hidden Walks AROUND York.
I must admit I was a little disappointed by this book simply because it is not what it says on the cover. The A-Z York Hidden Walks are mostly set OUTSIDE the city which is not what I wanted in this book.I have used a few books of this type, to walk my favourite city. I would especially recommend the Snickleways of York of for this type. Those books really gets you behind the main streets and presents you with some amazing views of York and its many buildings. This one concentrates on walks around the city of York. So to take advantage you must travel to them. This to me negates the value of the book.If you want a book of Walks around York and area then this is a decent guide.

great little book
This book is a little a5 size book with walks around York, the ideal size to put in your pocket or bag. It has lots of different options and varying degrees of difficulty. It highlights many things you might ordinarily have missed as you explore this beautiful city. The maps are clear and large on each walk so you can see exactly where it is and where to go. Alan Sharp begins each chapter with a description of what you can see on the walk and any relevant history. There is also a summary at the bottom of the page showing: the start/finish point, nearest postcode, distance, time, and terrain. This is followed on the next page by a map with the route and attractions clearly marked, followed by detailed step-by-step directions.Overall though this is a grea book to give you ideas on where to go. I would highly recommend it.

Handy Guide Book
I really like this book. I actually work in York and know it well, but I love to walk and I thought this would be a perfect guide for me to see the city in a new light, instead of me using the same tired old routes. This book is absolutely perfect whether you know the area or not. Whatever your tastes are for sightseeing (historical, iconic, gruesome or grand), this book has it all. Broken down into small chunks, each section gives a little breakdown of what you can expect, then gives you points for where to start, proceed and end your walks. On each point is a little fact about the place it directs you to. There are also lots of little maps. It also gives you alternate routes if the river is in flood (which is fairly common in York), so you can enjoy whatever the weather. You don't need to be a 'serious' walker, it's just a great handy guidebook for going on your own tour. Why pay for the generic tourist bus tours when you can get up close and personal to the gorgeous city of York yourself?Fantastic book at a great price, highly recommend.

Needs more info, background, local color
My family enjoys hiking, so on a recent return trip to York I thought I would pick up this book. The variety of walking paths both in the city center and the surrounding area is versatile and gives better exposure to the area. And, the slim size of the volume makes it easy to pocket and bring along. However, in its present edition I still would NOT recommend bothering with this book. First and most importantly, the book does not justify its existence against readily available hiking apps. Everyone with a phone has access to AllTrails (or similar apps), and the apps are vastly more useful: they include GPS, a variety of map overlays, current conditions, trail reports, color photos, etc., and hundreds of official and unofficial trails in the vicinity of York rather than the 20 in this book. All these factors argue strongly in favor of the app over this or any book.So if a book like this is going to justify itself, it needs to do something else. It needs to provide some kind of insider or expert information on the area through which you are perambulating. History, notable buildings, important events that happened here, plants, animals, geography/geology, etc. And in that regard, this book comes up short. The included walks do not include significant info about those things. The provided info is rather sketchy and focuses mainly on giving directions so you can amble along the recommended path, which once again is something AllTrails (etc) simply is better at.Maybe edition 2 will address these shortcomings. When we were packing up our things and getting ready to go to the York train station, I left this book on the hotel dresser hoping someone else would benefit from it.
