what is the depth? is there space behind the shelf and the back of the locker?

It fits snugly in the locker and the back of the shelf should be touching the back of the locker.

is the bottom sturdy?

Yes. Holds books well. Highly recommend.

What are the dimensions?

It fits perfectly in my locker which is standard width of 12 inches (30.5 cm.) I think it can be used in the other "standard" width which is 15 inches (38 cm.)
