A fine quality ph meter with quick and accurate results.
This is a very nice ph meter that is not difficult to calibrate. The quality is great and the accuracy is also great. The instructions to calibrate it were easy to read & didn't take long to do. The overall testing results matched what our ph test strips results showed. This puts us at peace of mind knowing what we ferment will be safe to consume with quick digital results since we ferment frequently. This product is worth getting if you want to have precise numbers for big batches or recipes that you want to keep for future. You will need to buy distilled water so that you can rinse off the tip after each use but other than that it is a premium brand and I think it is worth the price.

Works well and its storage cap system protects the probe and prevents it from drying out
My first ph meter for testing dairy - using it to test super priobiotic yogurts. Was torn between this brand and another well known brand, but went with this one because of the kit, the cap with an O ring and small sponge in the tip that provides wet storage and protection of the probe even when it is on its side. Preventing the probe from drying out seems to be the key to a longer probe life. The Apera storage cap system makes this easy to do. The kit also comes with laminated instructions which are handy. I had been struggling with the paper test strips…never could get a precise reading. Love that this has a 2 decimal point read. I was nervous about the calibration process, but it turned out to be very easy. I’ve used it several times so far and love it. I draw my solution out with a sterile pipette and place it in a small shot glass…insert probe of the meter and very quickly have an accurate reading. Their support/customer service is great too. I called to get some spare sponges for the storage cap (comes with 2 extra), but they don’t sell them. They advised using a piece of any sponge…I found that a piece of small sponge hair roller works well. I would definitely recommend this meter. Hopefully it will hold up well over time.

Good tool
Accurate, works well, calibration tools all included. Need to supply your own DI/distilled water but otherwise great

Go for the spear tip. It's great for sourdough bakers.
I'm a baker and got this spear probe for easy pH measurements of my sourdough cultures and doughs. Just stick the spear into the dough and you get an instant and stable reading. It's easy enough to calibrate with the included buffers and instructions. It also compensates the pH based on the temperature, and displays that as well, though it's slower to stabilize on that value (especially if you're used to a Thermapen). But that's no big deal. There's also a backlight for easy reading. Here are the downsides of this meter: The tip is always supposed to be sitting in the KCl solution when not in use (just like most pH meters). This means the probe has to be stored upright, but the case stores it horizontally. I really wish they would have designed a vertical case for this purpose. So I end up having to store the probe outside of the case. I bumped it once by accident and it fell to the floor and the batteries came out. There was a slight damage to the battery connector plate, so it will no longer lock in place. It still works with the cap firmly in place, but still, this would have been prevented if they had a case for properly storing the probe upright. The amount of KCl solution included is a joke. Seriously, for a $200 meter, they could have given a bit more! But I still love this meter and it makes me a more informed baker. I'm also a biochemist, and haven't seen a better spear meter for this price.

Simple to use and efficient
Convenient and precise, easy to use, easy to calibrate, just perfect for monitoring sour dough bread acidity. Controlling the level of pH is much more precise to tell you where your fermentation process stands.

Design flaws
I bought this meter to test the pH of peat moss, soil, and compost. While the unit initially worked, it soon experienced issues. Issue one: Doing everything by the instruction book, the unit quickly began to take well over a minute to register the "smiley face" indicator. It's not feasible to hold a pH wand in a sample for over a minute to achieve a reading. Issue two: The plastic immediately surrounding the glass probe has 4 negative spaces which collect and hold particles of the biomass being tested. No matter what I did, how thoroughly I cleaned the unit, I always found debris floating in the storage solution, which obviously affects calibration, and quite possibly might be related to issue #1. I returned the unit. For the price I should get accurate readings in 5 seconds, not ballpark readings after 90 seconds. I have no idea why this device has 4 recesses that the sample substrate against the glass bulb after rinsing thoroughly. If it wasn't for that design flaw I would've considered exchanging or warranting the unit due to the extended result time, but that issue in combination with an obvious design flaw has made me decide to avoid Apera all together. I also returned an unused Apera EC meter, I was so disappointed in, dumbfounded by that obvious design flaw.

The kit is worth getting
I am using this instrument in cheesemaking. The instructions on how to calibrate it were difficult to understand. I found a youtube that explained it better. It seems easy to use now. I calibrate it everyday I use it. I had to order more storage solution because I poured it out when I first opened up the kit. Don’t pour it out, you have to store the tip in the storage solution. They do give you an extra bottle for one fill up of storage solution with the kit.

This is a very good pH meter from a company well respected for quality scientific instruments.
The readings settle quite quickly and the built in temperature element corrects the pH for temperature saving that extra step. The instrument is robust and feels well made. I am pleased with it.

We’ll designed, accurate and very easy to use. But expensive.
I bought this to improve my sourdough bread baking. It’s a lot of money for this application, but it’s my hobby, and it has really paid off. The pH of sourdough starter is a great gauge of its readiness for baking. It’s also a very reliable gauge of how quickly the dough is progressing through the stages of fermentation before you make the critical decision to shape the loaf and start the proofing stage. Through the seasons, the timing changes with room temperature. Winter sees slow fermentation, and hot summers accelerate it. Timing by the clock is unreliable. This is where pH comes in. The pH meter allows me to hit the right spot every time. It makes it even easier by adjusting the displayed pH reading to account for temperature differences. This meter is convenient, easy to use, and consistently accurate. It makes my baking a lot easier.

Bon appareil
Le PH mètre APERA est de très bonne qualité, la mallette est très pratique. Il est facile d'utilisation. Je ne mets que 4 étoiles car la notice n'est pas en français. Je l'ai entièrement traduite en français. Je recommande
