Very highly recommend
For what poker is and the way you progress it has its hurdles, I started reading books when I we will say"enjoyed playing the game but got really fed up on having to top up my chips account every Friday to have my cash games online over the weekends" Or go on merry go rounds at the table just swapping chips. This book is great for when you have learned the basics and want to understand and add theory to your strategy and turn your scenes into actual black and white facts you can use during your game, Poker is a numbers game after all and that the path any serious player should take to progress is to follow and understand the math. This book and the online enrolment courses are really great, Alton explains everything bit by bit and makes it easier to understand the logic behind the numbers side of Hold'em. The online course you get with his paperback book is worth its weight in gold, if you need to take that extra five minutes to understand the logic behind the numbers I found it easier to digest with the help from the included online course, plus Alton personally responds to his customers questions who have spent there time and effort with his book that I think is really impressive in itself. I have to say I now walk out from a game with a profit most of the time and this book has had a really positive impact on my overall performance. I very highly recommend this book and the online courses provided to coincide with this book, am sure you will get to where you want to be when you put the time in and this tool has done it for me. If you enjoy hold'em and want to take your game to the next level, Go for it and enjoy

Adds Flesh to the Bones
As the title suggests, this book focuses on the essentials of poker maths. It is not designed for experienced players, but more at beginners or those that have not really paid too much attention to the theory of poker before (like me).I wouldn't say anything in the book is particularly ground-breaking, but it did help to explain the maths behind things like equity, pot odds and implied odds and how often a bluff needs to work for it to be profitable. All of these things I knew existed, but actually putting it into practice was where I was sometimes coming unstuck. Having a better understanding of these fundamentals will no doubt improve my game.I would definitely recommend this book to anyone new to the game, or looking to start taking it more seriously before getting into a more in depth theory book.

For People Who Like Wading Through Treacle
I'm sorry to say that for me this book, though actually the better of the two poker books I've tried, suffers hugely from an approach not firmly based in such clear, simple, jargon-free communication as might immediately help the reader to stop frowning in perplexity and to get around to realising that in many cases what the author is saying is--not very much. I feel as if much of what I learnt from the book, I learnt almost by accident or osmosis; Lord knows the author didn't always do a great job of conveying it. To me the book mostly falls between two stools; any reader who understands poker enough to wade through this is probably not going to learn all that much from it but may feel that most of it could have been said much more succinctly, as if with regard for the reader.

Essential Reading for any Beginner
As someone who has only been playing regular poker for a few months now, this book is an absolute must-have.The author explains fundamental concepts in am easy to dissect manner which makes it easy to remember and put into action on the felt. This book is very well laid out and each section is tied together nicely so that you can always take something away from a reading session. I would recommend reading a section or chapter at a time, then playing a little poker focussing on the concepts to really see how important they are!
