RezensionAuf dieses Kooperationswerk zweier genialer Autoren habe ich lange gewartet. Becky Albertalli hat mich mit ihrem Buch „Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda“ (dt. „Nur drei Worte“, neuerdings als „Love, Simon“ bekannt) nicht nur dahinschmelzen, sondern oftmals auch lauthals lachen lassen. Zucker pur, aber wunderschön und witzig. Adam Silvera dagegen hat mich mit „More happy than not“ mit gebrochenem Herzen, aber glücklich zurückgelassen. Ich habe, entgegen meiner Gewohnheit, Rotz und Wasser geheult, gleichzeitig aber auch gelacht. Überflüssig zu erwähnen, dass ich mit der Erwartung an „What if it's us“ herangegangen bin, anfangs himmelhoch zu jauchzen und am Ende zerstört zu werden. Mit dem Anfang hatte ich recht, mit dem Ende – eher nicht.Zum ersten Mal hat mich das Buch nach drei Seiten zum Lachen gebracht. Und das war nur der Auftakt zu mehreren Stunden Gekicher und Gelächter, wofür ich mehrfach merkwürdige Blicke kassiert habe. Der Humor ist großartig und es gibt eine Menge Situationskomik. Das ist nicht nur Arthur und Ben zu verdanken, die abwechselnd Kapitel erzählen, sondern auch den anderen auftauchenden Charakteren. Alle Figuren haben etwas Einzigartiges und waren mir so sympathisch, dass ich auch über ihr Leben und ihre Gedanken mehr wissen wollte. Es kam regelrecht Wohlfühlstimmung auf, wenn diese Nebenfiguren die Bühne betreten haben. Insbesondere am Anfang war das oft der Fall, denn nachdem sich Arthur und Ben das erste Mal gesehen haben, verlieren sie sich wieder aus den Augen und es dauert eine ganze Weile, bis sie das nächste Mal aufeinander treffen. Das hat viel erwartungsvolle Spannung aufgebaut. Ich konnte gar nicht schnell genug weiter lesen, um zu wissen, wann sie sich endlich wiedersehen. Die ersten zwei Drittel des Buches waren perfekt und genau das, was ich von ihnen erwartet habe.Leider konnte das letzte Drittel das Niveau nicht ganz halten. Am meisten enttäuscht haben mich die vorhersehbaren, unnötigen Dramen, die sich nicht nur zwischen Arthur und Ben, sondern auch zwischen ihnen und ihren Freunden abspielen. Es gab Entwicklungen, die so offensichtlich waren, dass ich schon hunderte Seiten vorher darüber Bescheid wusste. Außerdem hätten einige Streits verhindert werden können, wenn die Charaktere sich einmal gegenseitig hätten ausreden lassen statt nach zwei Wörtern anzunehmen, sie wüssten, worauf der Gegenüber hinaus will. Dass sowohl Arthur als auch Ben sich nicht nur gegenseitig nicht mehr sehen wollen, sondern auch noch all ihre Freunde auf einmal von sich stoßen, sodass beide völlig allein dastehen, war mir einfach zu viel künstliches Drama. Ich muss dem Buch zugute halten, dass diese Situation dann nicht unendlich ausgewalzt, sondern relativ schnell gelöst wird. Trotzdem hat sie mich so verstimmt, dass ich das Ende dann auch nur okay fand. Es war schon wie erwartet, traurig und doch hoffnungsvoll, aber die überflüssigen Dramen haben mich aus der Geschichte katapultiert, sodass ich den Schluss emotional sehr distanziert gelesen habe. Ich war meilenweit davon entfernt, Tränen zu vergießen; besonders glücklich war ich allerdings auch nicht.FazitIch bin mit der Erwartung an das Buch herangegangen, am Anfang viel zu lachen und am Ende zerstört zu werden. Die ersten zwei Drittel waren dann auch tatsächlich perfekt: Großartige Situationskomik und trockener Humor verbunden mit einzigartigen Charakteren, die Wohlfühlstimmung verbreiten, und erwartungsvoller Spannung. Zum Ende hin hat das Buch dann leider abgebaut. Es gab vorhersehbare, unnötige Dramen, die künstlich aufgebauscht wurden und mich den Schluss emotional distanziert haben lesen lassen. „What if it's us“ war lange alles, was ich wollte, aber da ich gegen Ende den Kontakt zur Geschichte verloren habe, vergebe ich nur vier Schreibfedern.

El libro llego en buenas condiciones y en yn periodo muy corto, llego mucho antes del día que estaba programado.Ame tanto este libro, sin duda alguna Adam y Becky son la combincación perfecta, el libro estaba totalmente equilibrado con el toque tierno de Becky y el humor de Adam. Me gustaron ambos personajes y todas las referencias que hacían hacía películas, libros y música. He de decir que es uno de mis libros favoritos de este año.What If it's us nos cuenta la historia de Arthur y Ben, y el como ellos por cuestiones del destino se encuentran en una oficina de paqueteria en New York una de las ciudades más grandes. A lo largo de la historia podemos ver como los dos intentan estar juntos, sus citas son súper tiernas y sobre todo el drama que es totalmente inevitable.

Llegó en buen tiempo y en buen estado, una excelente lectura que sin duda conmueve. El diseño de su protector me encantó y la pasta dura blanca le da un toque de elegancia.Una hermosa historia que aunque esté en inglés es sencilla de entender.

i hated this book. i have no idea why people praise it so much. i decided to read it because i saw it ranked highly in entertainment magazine. i really tried to like it. i really did.the big problem: i cant tell the two characters apart. the story is from the perspective of two boys who fall in love, but i could never know who is who. like “is this the kid with the ex boyfriend or the kid with the job internship or what?” i never knew. because of this, i never connected to either of the boys. if they died i literally wouldnt be sad. i felt no connection to them.also, arthur (one of the two main characters) is a toxic and jealous person. pretty much all the cheap drama in the story is about how he’s jealous of bens exboyfriend and he’s having himself little pity parties. and ben is always like “sorry” and theres no reason to be sorry hes just feeding arthurs toxic nature.also, the book is sporting so many pop culture references that it feels like theyre shoving it down our throats. maybe i’m just a little biased because i despise musicals and that is much of what ben and arthur obsess about, but they repeatedly mention multiple pop culture things and it gets insanely cringey.the book also moves too slow. it took 200 pages for ben and arthur to start dating. TWO HUNDRED!! THATS HALF THE BOOK!! also, the ending was dragged out and i kept expecting to turn the page and see the acknowledgements but it just kept going, just kept stabbing me again and again.i tried to enjoy this book. i really, really did. i read the whole thing despite being bored the whole time. i actually hoped someone would die so it would get interesting. i wish i had never decided to read it. a lot of people seem to enjoy it, so maybe you will too, but heed this warning. its a terrible book.

Get two bestselling LGBTQ authors together and have them write a novel based on the lyrics of a three minute Dear Evan Hansen song and what do you get? Mostly you get 400 pages of pop culture references as filler.In the real world if two gorgeous, gay teen boys meet in NYC and are attracted to one another it would take about twenty minutes before their pants are down. They’d suck each other off first and see if they had anything in common to chat about later.Ah, but this is a gay romance book. It’s Becky Albertalli and that means ferris wheels and teen angst and lots and lots of Harry Potter references. How many Harry Potter references? I’m glad you asked, because I started counting them. Twenty-eight. It’s as if our authors Becky and Adam thought invoking JK Rowling repeatedly would increase book sales.But it isn’t just Potter, it’s sims, and instagram and Hamilton, and yes, Evan Hansen (first mention on page one, how subtle). This book is all schmaltz and feigned emotional conflicts where none really exist.Here’s what surprised me...it’s terribly written. There are a bunch of times the authors write the words “Guess how…” and don’t end the sentence with a question mark. ‘Guess how much I enjoy being the sweaty intern.’ Come on. Did they forget where the question mark was on the keyboard?They actually reference Craigslist Missed Connections in this novel. Which brings me to another point...how many pop culture references are too many, and when does over-using them make your work dated and archaic? I mean, no one, literally no one uses Craigslist missed connections anymore...and Craigslist itself probably won’t exist in five years.Was I engaged by the main characters Arthur and Ben? Yeah, I guess. After a few hundred pages I was like, “For the love of God just have sex already!” My favorite character was one of the secondary ones...Dylan. At least he was the comic relief in a book that drags to a very unfulfilling resolution.
