Q: will the quick disconnect fit a rug doctor?

no, you have to buy an adaptor. I was a bit disappointed when it arrived and I found that I had to shell out for a 20+ dollar adaptor to get it to fit correctly.

Q: would this work if I connected it to a wet/dry shop vac, instead of an expensive extractor?

I do it everyday (Mon-Fri) water hose from a water heater I use a Bosch 4 gallon and a 6.5 16 gallon shop vac w foam filter
