This is Cool!
This purchase is my second Sterling Engine. I like my first one so much that I had to get another. I like propeller driven airplanes, so I had to get one with a propeller. The seller shipped this item fast and everything arrived in a stout cardboard box and was in bubble wrap. Make sure to open every little package. The outer glass tube is not installed and is wrapped separate. Make sure to install the glass tube or it will not run. The glass tube and propeller are the only things you need to attach to the engine. Then two small machine screws to attach the engine to the base. An Allen wrench is included for all assembly. You need to thread the wick through its holder. Wet the tip of the wick with your fuel. Rolling it to a point assists in the threading. I use Klean Strip (Green), Denatured Alcohol Clean Burning Fuel in my Sterling engines. It burns clean, no odor and at the proper temperature for these Sterling engines. It will not turn the glass black. What little discoloration that does appear is easily wiped off without removing the tube after use and cool down. This is a thing of beauty. It has a nice thick glass base. The engine mount is stainless steel and is glued to the base. The engine is machined brass and mounts to the upright with two small machine screws. The propeller hub is machined aluminum. The propeller is wood. There is a same model with a black plastic propeller available. I think the wood looks better. It is well constructed and very solid once assembled. I would note that this does NOT come with a spare glass tube or any O-ring seals.I fueled it up and lit the flame. She was ready to run in about 10 seconds (my other engine takes a 30 - 40 second warm-up). The following information is based on you facing the engine from the front. Looking at the pitch of the propeller, its normal rotation would be clockwise to push air to the rear of the engine. I started the engine in a clockwise rotation. It runs in this direction but choppy. The problem is the air being pushed toward the rear blows the flame around. This takes heat off the glass tube making the hot air temperature inconsistent and the engine to run sluggish. This is fixed by starting the engine in a counter-clockwise direction. This pushes the air towards the front. The flame issue is fixed thus providing consistent heat to the engine. The engine runs smoother and much faster. Some Sterling engines don’t run in either direction because of mechanical timing issues just like a real engine. This little Jem runs in either direction and would run the same going clockwise if the moving air was blocked from the flame. How fast does this bad boy run? Fast enough for a table top display. Will this bad boy cut your finger off? No, it will not. I stopped the propeller many times going in both directions with my finger with no pain or discomfort whatsoever. I would start it going one way, stop it, flip it the other way, stop it and I would repeat this, many times over. This is much easier to start than my other engine (which runs fine once warmed up). The bottle of fuel was filled half way and it ran about 17 minutes. Obviously, the glass tube was to hot to touch. I touched the brass engine after running it. It was warm but not to hot to touch. Overall, I’m very happy with this Sterling engine and it has become my favorite of my two. This is made from quality components and is well built and solid once assembled. If you collect Sterling engines and want a simple propeller Sterling engine, then this is a good entry point.

Cool little object
This things is really cool. Nice little table top piece. Bought this for a nephew that wants to be a pilot: wrapped in a lesson on newtons three laws. That all said: 4 stars for some small reasons with some design flaws:1) there’s no instructions. Had I not been me, or if someone is new to this kind of mechanics or build, this could have been a bit tricky to understand. Not exactly a toy but it is a small moving model with glass parts.2) an alcohol lamp is provided with wick to provide the heat - nice thing to have ready - however, the base is glass; the alcohol lamp is also glass; this is a fast moving piece of toy machinery; these three things together once the flame is lit could equal disaster. I ended up using some museum wax to temporarily hold in place until I can make a coaster of sorts.3) not a issue with the item but Amazon delivery: provided explicit instructions to ensure safe delivery and they were once again ignored. Almost got this one stolen but caught a person about to steal it when I got to it.

No instructions
The media could not be loaded. Seems like an awesome idea but 0 instructions wasn't packaged well at all either.....

Works great!
The media could not be loaded. I don't know why other reviewers had a problem with this. Although there wasn't any kind of instructions, it was pretty easy to figure out. Assembled in minutes and lit the fire and it flies! Very interesting to watch. I may have to go for a larger one one day.

does not work
I have tried this engine over and over. It does not work! It's a shame it's a cool looking piece but thats not what I paid for.

Great time with the kids
Neat toy, well made, looks and feels high end. Best desk ornament around. Runs safely for a good while, no mess. Love it.

Awesome
There were no directions to assemble this item. And the lamp included did not seem to work, but I have a lamp from another stirling engine kit from this company that worked Great.
