The VA Claims system is not your friend
Virtually any veteran who has gone up against the VA's Claim Adjudication system has found to his or her dismay that, contrary to what the VA's mission is supposed to do, it is definitely NOT functioning in favor of the vet. The system is adversarial and often downright nasty, and often seems geared to outwait the veteran's lifespan before granting any amount of money or access to medical care. A guide to step-by-step battle against them is extremely helpful, and this book deals with only one aspect of a process that can overwhelm a sick or troubled vet. The author has a series of books dealing with various steps, and they are all good. One troubling aspect, however, is the concentration of combat as the only source of PTSD, and the total failure of the author to even mention women vets. Often, women vets suffer from other trauma sources, which may or may not include combat. Some male vets as well suffer trauma leading to PTSD from non-combat related sources, and the author should acknowledge these facts and adjust his books accordingly.

Very Helpful
The VA spends as much money trying not to pay benefits as they do pay. And then you have guys walking around with canes in VA hospitals that look like they could catch a football so I don't really blame them. Book is good and insightful. If you want your benefits your going to have to fight for them. It is up to the VA to be judge and jury, absolute power equals absolute corruption. Many in the VA are fair and some just like the fight. Overall they are fair but our country is going broke slowly and they are trying to stop the arterial money bleed. Many conservative lawmakers hate VA entitlements but when asked if they would have their kids go fight they laugh, I only have respect for the ones that served. We should amend our constitution that only Veterans can run for congress and senate. The book was helpful.

Some Information Okay, Rest Is Out Of Date Information Not Useful To Veterans
There have been only two books that dealt directly with how to file a VA disability claim, both by John D. Roche: Claim Denied! and The Veteran's Survival Guide: How to File and Collect on VA Claims, Second Edition. Sadly, Mr. Roche's books are at least five years old and will never be updated, due to his death in 2012. Plus, there are many new laws, rules and regulations that render some of Mr. Roche's advice ineffective.I have been in the VA healthcare and benefits systems for nearly 20 years and have been through the entire VA disability claims process, except to the Supreme Court. My own experiences have led me to author the upcoming book, VA DISABILITY CLAIM: A Practical, Step-By-Step Field Manual for Active-Duty Service Members and Veterans on How to Prepare, File, Maintain, Win and Appeal a Service-Connected VA Disability Claim Without Going Insane. This upcoming field manual will be published by Adagio Press on 01 August 2014.Mr. Roche's books still have some good material, but a lot of it is now outdated and not useful. It's time for newer books and field manuals to step up and take the reins, because service members and veterans nowadays have less time and patience than before and are not likely to wade through a lengthy book on the subject of VA disability claims and appeals. It must be a short, clear, concise field manual with concrete steps to take now.

claim denied book review
Book is well written and does in fact provide veterans with accurate information dealing with claims being denied. This author has written other books which talk about veterans benefits and VA claims processes which I have found to be extremely useful. I am a service officer for the VFW and American Legion so I frequently refer to his books for information. This causes me to look at other sources for information as well which results in me doing research that I use to assist my fellow vets with proper preparation of a claim before it is sent to the VA. Everything I do is absolutely free and the info in this author's books have aided me in becoming a better service officer. I recommend this book and his other ones for every veteran.

Have a claim? You need this.
This book has helped me to understand the claim process, and I work for the VA. Every veteran needs to understand that although it is VA's mission to assist in every way possible, each and every claimant must remember that he, or she, is the most important person to them, and as such, they must give their own claim top priority to provide all the evidence they can. This book helps those with claims understand the process, and possibly even prevent the need for an appeal.
