Mickey Outside

I wouldn't exactly call this a thriller. The story was amusing in parts and I liked that. Most of the characters are fun. Remember this book is fiction so please don't let things like the fact that one of the characters is only 29 yrs old and is a Victoria Secrets Angel model who has done more in 29 yrs than all the other characters put together keep you from enjoying the story. The very end was odd and sort of disappointing. But for the most part an easy and fun read.

I'm quite surprised at the number of negative reviews for this book as I did think it was a good read. As others have mentioned I certainly wouldn't have called it a thriller so perhaps they expected more 'thrills'. I thought the characters were well drawn, the story line was simple but the author didn't have to revert to swearing or detailed sex to entertain his readers which made a pleasant change. Characters were well drawn,and I thought quite likeable. I read this on the beach and it was light enough to pick up and put down without losing the plot. Probably would be a 3 1/2 score but I did find the detailed car trips rather boring. Certainly it's definitely worth more than 1 star, sometimes I cannot understand how readers measure the worth of a book.

I did get a giggle out of Jansen's History of Art being used as a resource . . . as a sophomore in college in my mid-50's, I'm using it in my History of Art class. What a hoot. I like Jennifer's taunt about it, too. This was a very engaging, if short, read. I loved the characters, and I hope Mr. Lender brings them back -- but really, there's no point. The book had a VERY satisfying ending, there's nothing, really, for them to come back for. I was just sad the book ended. Mickey was a terrific character. His motives for the crime, as much as they could be, were pure. How he pulled it off was just exquisite. And even if the book didn't say so until the middle, he had this planned, the actual end of the caper, from the very beginning of the plot being hatched. In fact, how it ended was why he chose that particular plot. As someone else said, this is my first David Lender story, and won't be my last, believe me. I did get this book through Kindle First and will enjoy reading other stories such as this the same way.

This was my first time reading Lender. I enjoyed the book although I expected a few more plot twists based on others reviews. The plot wasn't entirely predictable and I enjoyed the book. I felt like the plot was well developed and I was ready for some real action at the end. It seemed to me like the book came abruptly to an end like the author had met a page quota or discovered that he had enough material for another book and decided to save something for it. This was a decent story and a good book if you are looking for an easy read and a fairly predictable conclusion. I would read another book by this author but I don't think I would rush out to buy his latest at retail pricing. I read this for free through Amazon Prime and I would read another of Lenders books if one came available at that price.

Convincing in the sense that David Lender is writing on a subject well known to him. This is not to say that it was not imaginative - entertaining - and written with the humour of New York well captured. It was a most enjoyable read. White collar crime might seem to be differently treated to other crimes of a socially deprived nature. This brings home the truth that where's there's a crime, there's a victim, but penalties may vary. There was, however, poetic justice to the deeds done when the white collar prisoners were out of jail. A very enjoyable read.

This is just the sort of lightweight book you want on vacation: cheap and easy. While the prose isn't anything to write home about, it won't make you nauseous either. It's about as subtle as a sock full of pennies in the groin and only slightly deeper than the lyrics to those songs you wrote as a teenager. You're never in doubt of the outcome of the story, and the characters are just engaging enough to keep turning the pages, not so engaging that you ever get wound up worrying about their fates. Zero complexity, but on the beach, drink in hand, it will pass the time pleasantly enough. At first I was disgusted by the author's obvious man-crush on everything wall street and his hard-on for white-collar criminals, his whole wink-and-a-nudge routine to his fellow bankers, and the way he writes about various financial crimes as if they didn't hurt anybody and it's all just what happens amongst the "big and the powerful" people he lionizes. Then I realized I'd already expended far too much thought on a piece of fluff, took a deep breath and let it roll merrily on its little way. It's like Chipotle: you probably won't end up with gastroenteritis, it's not going to change your life, and hey, in a few minutes you won't be hungry. What else do you want for free?

David Lender, author, is a former investment banker. Mickey Inside is a convicted insider trader aficionado, serving his time. So you'd think there would be some more investment banker drama in Mickey's future. But no! When Mickey gets Outside, Lender weaves a skillful, intricate thriller set in the murky yet sophisticated world of forged art masterpieces. The characters are fun and well-developed, the action is fast-paced with lots of really interesting twists, and the con man turns out to have a heart after all. This one would make a great movie, with all of the good-looking big-name stars of the time playing the major parts. Read it, you'll love it. As the guy on the Men's Warehouse commercial says, "I guarantee it!"

I choose the number of stars based on my enjoyment of reading the book and not an evaluation of its literary merit. Creativity, originality, character development, interesting dialog, and unexpected plot turns and twists enhance my enjoyment of a book, hence are reflected in the number of stars. Mickey Outside scored well on the originality of the story, the detail presented describing the art world and art theft, the competent and completx plot layout and the character development. None of the major characters were stereotypes. The story itself was interesting and I really did not see where it was going. I actually expected Mickey to return to prison. I recommend the book as an interesting read.

Entertaining white collar crime novel. The characters, of whom one from Bull Street by the same author, are lovable. A lot of description of the New York scene. The plot holds the road and keeps readers interested until the end.

Excellent tale well told with a good appreciation of the characteristics of the social groupings he portrays. The story would not work without the implications of the NewYork Bubble living of many business classes. A good read.
